Dog Depression: Causes and Cures

George and Fritz -- two canine littermates -- spent their entire lives together. In the mornings they squabbled over the tastiest bowl bites. Sufficiently fueled, they then seemed to collaborate on clever schemes, like stealing tennis shoe laces or sneaking into forbidden places. They went on walks together, played and napped side by side.

This went on for 14 years until Fritz died. Suddenly, George no longer acted like the same dog. He slept more, withdrew from social activities and lost interest in his food.

At that point, a visit to the vet was in order. "In such cases, I always begin by looking for a physical cause," said Dr. Raymond Van Lienden, DVM, a veterinarian at The Animal Clinic of Clifton, Va. "I conduct a full examination, do the blood work, run x-rays and analyze the dog's complete health history to see what may be wrong." He added that for dogs like George, no physical malady might show up in the barrage of medical tests. "It's then that we have to look at other possible causes, including grief and depression."

Is Dog Depression Real?
Dr. Van Lienden says that no study has yet unequivocally proven that depression exists in dogs, but he is convinced animals have emotions. "When you come home, your dog may appear happy and excited to see you, and when you scold it, it may slink away with apparent guilt," he said, adding that dog's appear to suffer from physical as well as emotional pain. A recent University of Portsmouth study further found that pet owners observed emotions like pride, embarrassment, shame and even jealousy in cats, pigs, horses, rabbits, rats and hamsters, as well as dogs. Since mammals appear to experience comparable emotions, depression could be added to the list.

The challenge in diagnosing depression is that symptoms mimic those for many other health problems. These symptoms may include lethargy, weight loss, lack of interest in food, drink and social activities, and a tendency to sleep more. Medical examinations are critical to rule out health problems that may include anything from a chemical imbalance to a thyroid-related condition.

Causes for Depression
According to Dr. Van Lienden, change is usually at the root of canine depression. As for George, the change could be a sudden death, or other disappearance, of a valued dog or human companion. It might be an unwanted change of scenery, such as when the owner moves from one location to another. Or it could be an unwanted addition, like a new baby, pet, or housemate that has altered the dog's routine in some way.

Dr. Van Lienden offered these suggestions for preventing and treating depression in your dog:

  • If some kind of major change is forthcoming, try to gradually transition your dog by maintaining its usual schedule and keeping familiar toys and objects at hand/paw. Then slowly introduce your dog to the new person or place, allowing it to sniff and investigate as much as possible.
  • If another dog in your family dies, consider replacing it with a new dog, as studies suggest canines enjoy having same species companionship.
  • Once your vet rules out medical conditions as a cause for your dog's problems, say something like, "Humor me, doctor. Could my dog be depressed?" Some vets are more open to the possibility than others, so you may have to step in as your dog's mental health advocate.
  • In severe cases, consider medications that your veterinarian could prescribe, such as Prozac, which can "buy some time" to get your dog through the worst period.

The good news is that, unlike humans, dogs live more for the moment. Although grief and depression can linger for weeks or even months in canines, the feelings and related symptoms are usually temporary. "Most dogs will overcome the problems on their own," said Dr. Van Lienden. "It may just take a bit of time for them to cope and adjust."

Overweight Dog

My dog is just plain fat. They don't even make collars that will fit him. Will Prozac keep him from eating?

Response to Overweight Dog

Instead of asking to put your dog on drugs for his eating you should take your dog for a walk so he won't be "just plain fat."

fat dog

I agree exercise is the best medicine. Prozac will increase weight gain.

overwieght

I AGREE WEIGHT IS A PROBLEM FOR DOGS AND BEANE LOVES TO PLAY TAG SO I WALK AND PLAY WITH HIM.

Doggy Depression Issues

i saw a lot of comments regarding overweight dogs and depression. When do most dogs get depression? What's the normal weight for a Chihuahua? Thirteen, ten, or fourteen pounds?

Samantha

My dog Samantha gets plenty to eat and is a little over weight. We also have 2 other dogs named Coon who is female, and Jake, male. What can I do to Stop Samantha from eating feces.I've tried everything to get her to stop outside of standing there and picking it up right away. But what do I do when I'm not home? Does anybody have a sure way of breaking this habit of hers. Her breath is horrible, and the other dogs don't do what she does.

Samantha

They sell a tasteless, odorless powder called "Forbid" at veterinary clinics, and possibly something similar at Petsmart. If your dog is eating her own, mix it with her food. If she is eating the other dogs', mix it with their food. You have to do this daily for about a week, and then 3x/ week, gradually decreasing until the habit is broken.

Dog Depression

I adopted a dog last week. When I frist brought her home she was fine. She was walking around, she intreact with the family, and she even ran around outside in the back yard. Bit the next day she changed. She just lays on the couch and does nothing. She stopped eating, walking around, and interacting with the family.I toke her to the VET. and they said that she is fine. I'm worried about her because she stopped eating and I don't know what to do. I talk to her and rub her and show much love but it's not making any improvement. I need some advice from someone.....

depression in dogs

My 12.5 year old male yellow lab just lost his 15.5 year old mate. He does'nt want to eat and lays around looking very sad. He has bad hind legs so exercise is not an option. The dog I lost was on Anipryl and I have some left so I've given him 3 doses hoping it might make him feel happier. Will this medication hurt him and could it help him. Are there any natural remedies that I could give him to perk him up? Thank you

Re: Dog Depression

When we first adopted our puppy, he was very cute and playful for a few days then he was just "sad" and i think that the problem is that he was used to being with him brothers and sisters. If your dog has all of his shots you may want to take him to a dog park so he gets to be with other dogs. Dont give up on him he will come arround.

Older Dog Depression when adding puppy

Please send information to me on this issue. My older Dog had started to show signs of Depression, and is not eating his dog food. He has started to shut himself down. We have kept the same rutine, but did add a puppy. The only thing we changed was the NO Bite rule. And need information on training how to share.

Puppy Depression

I have a puppy and I don't kno what's wrong with her. I've done some research and depression may be one of the causes. She isn't playful anymore, eats very little, and sleeps alot. She doesn't seem to do much anymore. The only time I see her happy, for a brief moment, is when my boyfriend comes over. She really seems to like him. There is something that worries me, once in a while at night she throws up her food. What should I do?

depression

I have two female dogs that grew up together, and about 1 mth ago, they got into this terrible fight, since then we have had to keep them apart. Now one of the dogs seems very depressed, what should I do.

Depression

I have a 9 year old shih tzu who I believe is suffering from depression. I recently had my house redecorated and workmen have been in and out for about a month. Also, furniture, including his, has been rearranged with new furniture added. He has almost shut down, not interested in food, or walking. Also, has the inverted sneezing, which I believe is caused from anxiety. I am taking him to my Vet. to rule out any physical problems. However, I do believe he is very dreprssed.

my dog is depressing

My 2-yr old female dog may be a type of dog that would get depressing easily, so I gave another (female) dog I thought she would give her a company. She was happy and played with her a lot, but right now, she suddenly gets so depressing. Is that due to thunderstorms effecting to her?? Or jealousy from the new dog?
