What I Learned From My Dog This Year
By Jessica Bush for The Dog Daily
My 13-year-old Dalmatian, Singer, has become a great teacher. Though it’s not an easy thing to see her grow old at what to me feels like a lightning-fast rate, seeing her adapt to aging has taught me to approach each day with a bit more patience and appreciation.
She used to love leaping as high as my shoulders, but now she looks to me to carry her up just a few stairs because the strain is too much on her joints. It doesn’t seem that long ago when she was the first to wake us in the morning for breakfast and a walk. These were a few of her favorite things.
Now she prefers to sleep in and skip the walk
altogether. You might think she would be sad that her body isn’t what it used
to be, but that’s not the case at all. Singer is a happy dog. Her most cherished
part of the day is being near those she loves. Are there any better life
lessons than to appreciate every day as if it were your last -- and to extend patience
to yourself and others?
