Save Money on Winter Dog-grooming

When the weather's too cold for backyard bathing, how can you get Rover presentable without having to shell out for expensive dog-grooming services? Doggie DIYers are discovering several new dog-washing options.

For about $15, you can visit a self-service dog-wash facility with special deep sinks. Many also feature lowered floors so you don’t have to bend over the sink. These do-it-yourself facilities -- some freestanding businesses and others located in pet boutiques -- offer shampoos, conditioners, towels, brushes and dryers. Along with saving bucks and your back, there’s another big benefit: no cleanup!

Although you can wash your dog as often as once per week with gentle dog-shampoo so as not to overdry the skin, most dogs need bathing just once every four to eight weeks. Remember to brush your dog’s hair before bath time to get the best results from your efforts.

For even more savings, check unconventional options. A growing number of car-wash businesses, and even Laundromats, now offer special stalls outfitted for dog bathing. Extras, like shampoo and towels, vary by business -- but expect to pay $5 to $10. Some washes even offer vacuums to quickly dry your dog's hair.

These new grooming options will not only result in a clean dog this winter, but they’ll also allow you to clean up on savings too!
