My female miniature Chihuahua/pincher has had an excitement-induced cough for two days. She was boarded at a veterinary hospital last week. What should I do?

From the Editors of The Dog Daily

While an excited dog may make a coughing sound, a persistent cough isn't just due to an emotional state. Sometimes older dogs with preexisting health issues, such as heart problems, can develop a cough when they are excited or after they exercise, but the increased adrenaline isn't the real cause of their hacking. Many illnesses can make your dog cough, and these include bronchitis, pneumonia, lungworms, heartworms, roundworms and heart disease. In your case, the most likely culprit is kennel cough, given that your dog was recently boarded. Kennel cough is a contagious upper respiratory infection. Although the coughing can sound horrible, the ailment is not usually serious. Antibiotics and cough suppressants can help, but schedule a veterinary visit to make sure this is the cause. If your dog does have kennel cough, the illness should clear up in a few weeks.
