Software Matches Dogs With Humans

Lewis stares at the camera with soulful eyes sure to melt hearts. Finding an online match shouldn’t be that difficult for such a catch.

But in this case, the heartthrob is a 28-pound, 5-month-old Australian shepherd mix. The Oregon Humane Society (OHS), which developed an innovative online matching service, will make sure Lewis finds a new home based on more than the pup’s good looks. Stealing a page from online dating services, this nonprofit uses a database with extensive search criteria to improve the pet adoption experience.

“It’s a pretty unique feature,” says David Lytle, the OHS’s public affairs manager. “We are the only Humane Society I know of that has this find-a-match feature implemented so extensively.”

How Dog Matching Works
When a dog arrives at the OHS, a staff member photographs and weighs the pup and enters its information into a database. “Just as fast as our staff can enter this data, it’s posted live,” explains Lytle. “If a little cocker spaniel comes in the door at 10 a.m., usually by noon all of its data is up on the system.”

The database listing is updated every 10 minutes. Adopters can surf through listings that offer a photo, vital statistics and information about each dog’s personality. For instance, Lewis “is a social butterfly who really seems to enjoy meeting other people and dogs.” However, Lewis isn’t suited to a home with cats.

Successful Adoptions
When a dog is adopted, its status is changed on the database. People from far and wide seem to notice. “We get so many comments from around the world,” says Lytle. “People love the updates.”

Although fans from around the globe follow the service’s dogs and cats, almost all the adopters come from the Portland area. The questionnaire filled out by potential adopters not only asks about the breed or size of dog you want, but also about the suitable activity level and desired personality. The database searches for matches based on the criteria that would-be adopters provide.

If you see a pooch that you’d like, you can place a hold on the pup. If no matches are found, you can then request that the OHS send you an email notification when your doggie match is good to go. Since the service started last August, 3,000 people have signed up for email notification, says Lytle. The service is particularly valuable at OHS, where 10,000 pet adoptions are processed each year.

“We’re very happy with it,’’ Lytle says. “We’ve gotten good feedback from the community.”

Tips for Finding Your Dream Dog
Even if you don’t live near Portland, the find-a-match program can help with your search for the right dog. Look at the types of questions OHS poses to determine what questions you should ask before adopting a pooch. Factors to consider include:

  • Your activity level
  • Whether you already have pets in your household
  • The size of your home and any possible pet restrictions
  • Whether you have children

Simply taking dog breeds into consideration isn’t sufficient, says Vicki Kirby of the Humane Society of Fairfax, Va. “It is amazing to me how many people want a dog they know nothing about,” she says. “They see a picture and fall in love with the look of the dog and have no idea what this type of dog is really like. The most important quality to look for is the dog’s personality and disposition. Even if they know the traits of the breed, a particular dog may not have those traits.”

The Humane Society of Fairfax uses a questionnaire that can be downloaded online then faxed or emailed. The society also sends email notifications when a potential match arrives. Of course, it’s important to meet your potential new pup in person, say both Lytle and Kirby. And it’s never a good idea to fall for a pretty face.

“We always tell people you need to know yourself, know what your own lifestyle is,” Lytle says. “You might be seduced by a young border collie that is the cutest thing you’ve ever seen, but if you have knee or hip problems, and your idea of exercise is just one walk around the block, you and the border collie are not going to be happy.” Instead, devote time and care when selecting a dog, and that will vastly improve your chances of living happily ever after.

Jessi says: I am personally and poelossirnalfy acquainted with Marc Goldberg, creator of the Force Free Method of dog training. As such, I am in a position to accurately report that Marc's approach to training is supremely humane and gentle. His fundamental theory is to kindly entice dogs to learn rather than force or dominate them in any way. Subtlety, relating to each and every dog as a unique being and adjusting his training choices appropriately are also central to Marc's dog training paradigm. I have seen Marc work with a variety of dogs and can attest to his talent / expertise and vast knowledge base, his respect for all dogs, the remarkable changes his training has wrought in the lives of owners and dogs who might otherwise have been put down, his appreciation of the species as a sentient, intelligent entity and his impressive affinity and ability to communicate with dogs using only his soft voice and subtle body language. I have learned a great deal from Marc his consistent advocacy for training dogs in a sensitive, kindly manner has impressed many clients and trainers alike. It is an interesting intellectual exercise to read this highly critical account of Marc and the Force Free Method as it was written by someone who does not know him, has never worked with him and has no direct knowledge of the Force Free Method. For all of Ms. Donaldson's insistence on education and scientific relevance, she has fallen woefully short of her own standards in this blog post. Generally speaking, it is always astonishing to me that the self-described Positive trainers speak of other trainers who are not strictly aligned with their theories and practices harshly, in a scathingly condescending manner and most often without empirical knowledge of the subject at hand while at the same time appealing to the gang (dare I say pack) mentality of their like minded readers. These emotionally charged critics incite paranoia, panic and fear. More often than not, these holier-than-thou naysayers utilize a vitriolic tone which is provocative, antagonistic and histrionic. The line they have drawn in the sand has created a serious us vs. them mentality in the dog training community at large. Legions of trainer are lumped into generalized categories and are sliced to pieces by the swords of the Positives . By virtue of Ms. Donaldson's blog post, I have now been obliquely called a sadist and a quack since I am a member of the IACP and I do not ascribe to this style of dog training. Ms. Donaldson could not recognize me out of a crowd of two people yet there I am standing amidst other cruel ogres with a big blood red letter emblazoned on my chest. She knows nothing of the way I train, but her sweeping charges paint me as an idiot, cruel, uneducated, unethical and hopelessly inhumane. Wow. Just wow.I hold onto the hope that eventually, both groups of trainers who are facing off across that line in the sand can begin to share information in a respectful fashion, share training techniques and explore whether we actually have a bit more in common with each other than we realize. Perhaps this is naive, but an open mind in conjunction with a closed mouth can be a revelation. In the meantime, although I have numerous comments yet unstated herein, I have dogs to train

My husband was not happy about my new dog purchase, as we had lost our choc. lab, of 10 yrs., to cancer, a few months before we got, this little girl,...but, he as come to love this dog, as much as I do. wonderful breed, very friendly, non-aggressive, very little shedding, but, needs to spend a lot of time, with family members----we take her just about everywhere we go, I think it is the best choice we've ever made, in regard to Breed. Ideal choice, but, more so probably, for older people who have more day hours free to spend with their dog, than those who are still in the work force.

Jarimiah says: I need a cute and cuddly small and trainable dog. What kind of dog is this? Yorkies are great family dogs. They love to play and they're great with children. The bad news is that they shed. Some types of yorkies shed almost 50% of their natural hair. If you are looking for a small and cute dog to snuggle with, you've found you're match. You can either order yorkies online or go to pet stores looking for the little rascals. Never give up on those cute little dogs if you really want them. But the problem is I don't have enough money to buy one of these cuddly monsters. And I lost my wallet. Somebody out in this world has dollars that I won from a kids convention when I was 12 years old. My life is just ruined. So if you find a Yorkshire Terrier under $100 please let me know!

The dog would also need to be good with kids (5, 7, 12, 14), it will get all the exercise it needs because we live on a farm. We dont want a extreamly active dog because it will be indoors. Does any one know of a dog that will be right for us?

KAREN ESCOBAR says: I'm looking for the right female dog to be my dog "Rascal" friend. A mild mannered, submissive female. Mixed breed is fine. My dog is use to being the only dog. He gets along well with dogs that are none confrontational. He is a 44 pound chow mix but doesn't have the chow personality. The new dog should probably be at lest 2 years or more. My dog doesn't care much about puppies.

The dog will be inside and outside and we may have grandchildren one day so it needs to be good with children. We have always had terriers and found them to be hyperactive and barking all the time. Any help you could give us would be greatly appreciated.

We already have a very sweet but very huge lab mix at home so we are looking for a dog that isn't that big and does well with other pets. We also have a little one at home, so we want a dog that will be gental with her but a good guard/watch dog. Can anyone help with a sugestion-please and thanks.

Frank Dickinson says: I am a single 56YO retired man with permanent disability.. I worked in the Oilfield for 20 years before going back to school and becoming a RN. Oops, that was harder on my back than working with iron. I can still get around OK but my back is wore out. I have 8 grandkids but I need a fulltime friend. My last dog was a large Airdale named Gino. He was a rescue dog that was pretty mature when I got him. I don't think it would be possible to love an animal any more than I loved him. I have a pickup and riding in the front or back would be up to them. They would be a house dog but we would go to the dog park several times(3 or 4) a week. I get to pick the TV channel and they would have to be well mannered around my grandkids. Sleeping arrangements are negotionable. I would consider any breed. I would like a smart dog but they probaly don't need to be a lot smarter than me.
